Chicago budget to merge police, fire headquarters

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the merging of Chicago's police and fire department headquarters, and the closing of 3 police district stations will be elements of the city's 2012 budget.

Emanuel told the Chicago Sun-Times (http://bit.ly/pY6ub3) on Tuesday the consolidation of anti-terrorism, marine activities, helicopter and bomb and arson units and the combined police and fire headquarters will create a "more agile bureaucratic structure."

Chicago's 25 police districts have their own station. Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says each station closed will result in 20 more officers being put on the street.

Emanuel says he is aware residents believe living close to a police station makes them safe. But he says it more important to have a police officer patrolling a community.

Emanuel will unveil his 2012 city budget Wednesday.
