Illinois Marriage License

Before you are legally married you must obtain a marriage license. A marriage license is a legal document that officiates the marriage. The documents must be signed by the officiant who performed the wedding. In Illinois, you can apply for the document at your county clerk’s office.
1

Visit the county clerk's office in your area. Both parties must be present to complete a marriage license application.
2

Present valid identification that documents your age. Both parties must do this. A state identification card will suffice. However, if you do not have a valid ID card, two pieces of ID in the form of a certified birth certificate, U.S. resident alien card, U.S. naturalization certificate, foreign passport, baptismal record, life insurance policy or consulate ID card are sufficient.
3

Pay a fee to obtain your marriage license. The fee is payable by check, money order, cash or credit card, and the amount varies by county.
4

Wait for your marriage license. It may take up to 30 minutes for the clerk to enter your information into the computer system. The license is effective for 60 days beginning the day after issuance and is effective in the county where it was purchased.
