Illinois Identification Card

Identification cards from the state of Illinois help to prove both your identity and your residency in the state. In general, you do not need one if you have a driver's license because the license performs essentially the same function. Official state-issued identification cards, however, are critical for people who don't have driver's licenses because you often need to present a photo identification for banking, when using a credit card and obtaining a passport among other tasks. Driver Services Facilities located throughout the Illinois issue identification cards.
1

Gather your documentation. Illinois has four categories for acceptable proof of identity and residence and first-time applicants will have to satisfy each of them. New applicants need one document each from the following categories: written signature, birth date, Social Security number and residency. You can use the same document to fulfill more than one category's requirements.
2

Go to a Driver Services Facility and fill out an application in its entirety. Present the completed application and your identification documents to a DSF employee who will verify your information and take your picture.
3

Pay the fees. As of 2010, the identification card fee is $10. People who are 65 and over can receive theirs for free, as can the homeless and disabled.
